‘I don’t have time!’ – that’s often the reason people give for flying instead of travelling overland. It’s an understandable comment – with our must-have-everything-now society, our time is precious, and we don’t want to spend too much of it getting where we’re going.
‘It’s cheaper to fly,’ is another reason – equally understandable when we consider that rail travel costs seem to be ever increasing, and zero tax on aviation fuel allows artificially cheap flights.
This assumption feeds our behaviour, which then becomes habit. We don’t really take flights because it’s cheaper or quicker, we take flights because that has become the normal way to travel.

Unless you live right next to the ferry port, if you’re going to Dublin from the UK, chances are you’ll fly. But is it cheaper? And how long does it actually take?
Travel time London to Dublin
Train and ferry: 8 hours 15 minutes

So on the face of it, flying seems far quicker, but when you factor in the actual journey time, it’s not quite so much. When you fly short distance, more of your time is spent on the ground than in the air. So for this particular trip, your journey time is at least tripled from the advertised flight time.

The overland journey time is pretty much what it says, which makes planning anything around your travel a lot easier.
How about cost?
If you buy a train ticket to Holyhead, then another ticket for the ferry, it will cost you upwards of £100. But with ‘Rail and Sail’ you can travel from any UK station all the way to Dublin, on a single ticket.
A rail and sail ticket typically costs £49 each way. The air fare is £40 each way on Ryanair, but that doesn’t include ANYTHING, not least getting to the airport in the first place – which is £13.60 from London to Southend. To travel via Heathrow on Aer Lingus it’s £83 each way plus the Heathrow express (£20) or a tube fare. So, flying is not actually that cheap. In fact, it’s cheaper not to fly – sometimes far cheaper!
Time well spent
So we come back to the issue of time. In order to catch a 20:05 Ryanair flight you can head straight to the airport after work. For Aer Lingus (18:10 flight) you’ll need to take the afternoon off. Rail and sail (0910 from London Euston), requires a full day off work.
But here’s where you can get creative. On a three-hour rail journey, with power sockets and WIFI, you can get some serious work done. Then lunch while you’re changing to the ferry, then another three hours uninterrupted work time with plug sockets and WIFI. If you can convince your employer that’s ‘working from home’, you don’t need that day off.

Of course, you don’t need to do any of that stuff – travel time can be spent reading, catching up on Netflix, gazing out of the window, enjoying a beer. More of your time is spent on holiday, too – if you chose not to work on the way, your holiday begins the minute you sit down on the train, and you’ll arrive in Dublin in time to have a proper evening out. For a flight to get you there at that time, you’re looking at almost twice the price, and an afternoon off. Is that really that much of a better deal?

The journey from London to Dublin is calm, enjoyable, and full of a sense of adventure. Spying the wide expanse of the sea when the train turns onto the north coast of Wales is always spectacular, and the castle at Conwy and the Menai Bridge are treasures of architecture that people come specifically to visit – so being able to enjoy them from your train seat is a massive bonus. The ferry is spacious with plenty to keep you entertained: good food, comfortable seating, a plug for your phone and free WIFI.
None of the journey needs to be ‘wasted’ time – you can spend it reading, working and making phone calls. You can’t do that on a plane.
Of course, one of the biggest considerations here is emissions. Flying to Dublin from London would generate 135kg CO2 per passenger. The Rail and Sail option produces just 21.8kg CO2 per passenger. That's an 84% saving on CO2.

Time to change
It’s about reassessing our priorities, not just following the herd. Understanding that yes, we do have time to take the train. And yes, we can afford to travel in more sustainable ways. Overland travel is enriching in a way that flying just isn't. We need the social norm to shift away from flights, not just for the sake of the planet, but for our own sake, too.
